Colombian forward Danny Barrera and Uruguayan born midfielder Sebástian Guenzatti each scored the winning goals for their respective teams – the Atlanta Silverbacks and New York Cosmos during the NASL Week 7 action this past weekend.
Barrera, who played on the amateur club Cal FC that reached the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last year, notched the eventual game-winner in the second half off an assist from Mexican striker Ruben Luna in the host Silverbacks’ 2-1 victory over the San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday. Luna had the first goal for the NASL Spring Season Champion in the first half.
The win was the first for the host team of the NASL Soccer Bowl 2013 since the opening game of the Fall Season last month.
Also on Saturday, a second-half goal from Guenzatti, who played with the Uruguayan club Huracán FC prior to coming to the Cosmos, gave the New York side a 1-0 victory over the visiting Minnesota United FC.
The win also extended the Cosmos home unbeaten streak and moved them to sole possession of first-place in the 2013 NASL Fall Season Standings.
Seven of the nine league goals scored during this past weekend’s encounters came from NASL international stars with the Dutch forward Hans Denissen notching his 11th goal of the year for the Scorpions in the 2-1 loss to the Silverbacks, while African midfielders – Ty Shipalane (South Africa) and Evans Frimpong (Ghana) each scored for the Carolina RailHawks and Tampa Bay Rowdies, respectively in the 2-2 draw. On Sunday, Jamaican defender Lance Laing gave the host FC Edmonton the lead in the first half, before Cuban forward Yaikel Perez scored the equalizer for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the second stanza in the 1-1 stalemate.
Every Monday throughout the 2013 Fall Season, the North American Soccer League (NASL) will put its international stars - both coaches & players – under the ‘NASL International Spotlight’ focusing on the league’s overseas connections.
