Midfielder Danny Barrera scored twice and forward Alex Caceres had one to pace the 2013 NASL Spring Season Champion Atlanta Silverbacks to a 3-2 win over the five-time Guatemalan champion CSD Xelaju MC and claim the ‘Reto Cup’ in front of sold out crowd of 5,000 at Atlanta Silverbacks Park on Saturday evening.
The encounter was last tune-up for the Silverbacks before the start of their Fall Season opener against Minnesota United FC next Saturday, August 3.
Atlanta struck first in the opening seven minutes when Colombian native Barrera scored off a 25-yard free kick that beat the Xelaju goalkeeper Mynor Alvarez for the 1-0 lead.
After conceding an early goal, Xelaju started to control the possession and create some quality scoring opportunities.
In the 24th minute, the Superchivos forward Israel Silva got on the end of a pass just seven yards from goal, but his effort was somehow pushed wide by an onrushing goalkeeper Joe Nasco.
Nasco made an even more incredible save just five minutes later, denying a looping header from forward Edgar Chinchilla. The Guatemalan’s effort came from a well-placed corner kick, and forced Nasco to tip the ball over the crossbar with his outstretched arms.
In the 53rd minute of the second half, midfielder Milton Blanco played a beautiful cross-field pass to forward Borfor Carr who then found Barrera for his second goal of the game.
Xelaju on the board in the 70th minute when Silva forced substitute goalkeeper Eric Ati into a huge save from a free kick, but midfielder Julio Estacuy was there to tap it in to make it 2-1.
Two minutes later, the Silverbacks found the net once more when midfielder Pablo Cruz dribbled around three Xelaju defenders before crossing the ball into the path of second half substitute Caceres who calmy deposited it into the corner of the net for a 3-1 lead.
The game took a dramatic turn in the 77th minute when Xelaju again cut the deficit to one after the Silverbacks defender Shane Moroney took down a Superchivos player just inside the 18-yard box, giving the visitors a penalty. Silva took the shot and scored make in 3-2.
Xelaju pressed forward in the final minutes in search of the equalizer, but the Silverbacks held on for the victory.
