STOPPAGE TIME - NOVEMBER 23

Your weekly recap on all things RailHawks and soccer

While some of us were being filled with turkey and pumpkin pie, the soccer world kept the news coming. The Black Friday edition of ‘Stoppage Time’ is filled with this week’s soccer news.

The RailHawks announced this week that 10% of all ticket revenue for the season will be donated to the Triangle community starting in 2013.

You can be a part of the RailHawks' growth and donation back to the community by joining the RailHawks front office.  The RailHawks are hiring full-time and seasonal employees.

Early in the week, news came out that David Beckham will be leaving MLS to “experience one last challenge” and the MLS Cup will be his final match with the LA Galaxy.  (Video of Beckham discussing his decision to leave LA.)

You can join the RailHawks on Saturday, December 1st for the RailHawks Holiday Party at Backyard Bistro to watch Beckham’s final MLS match when the Galaxy host the Houston Dynamo in the 2013 MLS Cup.

The RailHawks Holiday Party presented by Crown Royal Maple will include a free Crown Royal tasting, an autographed game worn jersey auction, free food, and MLS Cup viewing party.  All RailHawks Ticket Package Holders receive an invite to the RailHawks Holiday Party.  Call the Cruizers Box Office at 919-459-8144 for more information.

Around the NASL, the New York Cosmos appointed former MetroStars leading goal scorer, Giovanni Savarese, as Head Coach heading into their inaugural season.

Voting for NASL Play of the Week continues with the right side of the bracket in the Round of 16.  RailHawks midfielder Tiyi Shipalane faces off against Tampa Bay goalkeeper, Jeff Attinella, for the right to move on to the Quarterfinals.

On Wednesday, US Soccer held a conference call announcing the creation of a new women’s professional league.  The yet-to-be-named league is planned to kick off in 2013 in 8 cities.

The news of the new league comes during the NCAA Division I Women’s soccer tournament, where both Duke and UNC have advanced to the quarterfinals.  The Quarterfinals kickoff Friday night with winners advancing to the 2012 Women’s College Cup.

In the Men’s bracket, UNC is the remaining representative from North Carolina. The number 9 seeded Tar Heels play Sunday in the Round of 16 against Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Thanksgiving week, proved tough for some managers to survive.  After a 3-0 loss to Juventus, Chelsea couldn’t wait to rid themselves of Roberto Di Matteo.  Di Matteo was relieved of his duties during a 4:00am crisis meeting shortly after the team’s plane landed back in the UK. Ex-Liverpool boss, Rafa Benetiz has been tagged interim manager.

Unhappy with results, the Brazilian Football Confederation finds themselves in need of a new manager.  Mano Menezes was let go, leaving the host nation of the 2014 World Cup in search of his replacement.

Queens Park Rangers announced the firing of their manager, Mark Hughes, after the club's slow start to the season.

Manchester United hasn't needed a new manager for the past 25 years, as Sir Alex Ferguson has led them the Red Devils to 37 trophies, including 2 Champions League and 12 Premier League titles. On Friday, a statue of Ferguson was unveiled outside Old Trafford.

2013 will begin the start of qualifying for the U-20 World Cup.  Click Here to see the draw for the U.S. U-20 MNT.
