In the first leg of the series, played in chilly conditions at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota, neither the Stars nor Scorpions could find the back of the net. Goalkeepers Matt VanOekel and Daryl Sattler had impressive showings, making four saves apiece en route to keeping clean sheets. The teams move into the second leg at Heroes Stadium level on aggregate, a venue where the teams have played, and tied, on two prior occasions.
The NASL Semifinals are a 2-game series with each team playing at home once and the team with the greater number of aggregate goals in both games winning each series. If this game is tied after 90 minutes, based on the tie in the first game, we will advance to a 30 minute extra time period followed by penalty kicks if the game is still deadlocked.
This season, the Stars and expansion side San Antonio met for the first time in history on June 2, at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. With both teams focused on U.S. Open Cup fixtures just days away, the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The teams would draw twice more during the series, drawing 1-1 in Minnesota and 1-1 in the Alamo City in the final match of the regular season.
The most memorable match between the two sides took place on August 11, at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota. Marred by controversy, the Stars had two goals incorrectly disallowed by the officials. A second half penalty from Scorpions’ forward Hans Denissen won the match for the league-leaders, 1-0.
