NASL Semifinal Preview: Minnesota vs. San Antonio

Stars Host Scorpions on Saturday

Minnesota continued their remarkable record of getting victories in the NASL Playoffs last weekend with a 2-1 quarterfinal round victory over Puerto Rico. Now the defending NASL Champion Stars will face off with 2012 NASL Regular Season Champion San Antonio in the semifinals. The NASL Semifinals will each be a 2-game series with each team playing at home once and the team with the greater number of aggregate goals in both games winning each series.

The Stars and expansion side San Antonio met for the first time in history on June 2, at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. With both teams focused on U.S. Open Cup fixtures just days away, the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate. The teams would draw twice more during the series, drawing 1-1 in Minnesota and 1-1 in the Alamo City in the final match of the regular season.

The most memorable match between the two sides took place on August 11, at NSC Stadium in Blaine, Minnesota. Marred by controversy, the Stars had two goals incorrectly disallowed by the officials. A second half penalty from Scorpions’ forward Hans Denissen won the match for the league-leaders, 1-0.
