It’s a familiar scene for RailHawks fans: Ty Shipalane slicing through the opposing team’s defense. And rarely has he failed. With four goals and four assists in the final 15 minutes of both NASL and Open Cup matches, Shipalane is easily the most productive player at the end of the game. Furthermore, all four of his goals have been game-winning or tying.
Up until Saturday, Shipalane’s biggest goal came in the upset against defending MLS Champions, LA Galaxy, in front of a sold out crowd at WakeMed Soccer Park. Shipalane electrified the fans and put the RailHawks back in the game just nine minutes after coming onto the field. He also had the assist on Brian Shriver’s game-winning goal in the 88th minute.
RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke is well aware of the threat Shipalane poses in the late stages of the game and has always used it to the team’s advantage. “It is somewhat unique to have a player that is so dynamic late in the match,” said Clarke. “Ty’s ability to attack the defender can make all the difference in the final minutes. He forces the defense into tough situations and has the ability to finish himself or setup a teammate.”
If there’s one thing RailHawks fans have learned this season, it is to never leave a game early, especially when the stage is set for Shipalane. Watch Shipalane’s game winning goal below:
