RailHawks Tie Second-Place Rowdies in a Thrilling Match

Last minute heroics allow Rowdies to rescue a point

The Carolina RailHawks (6-7-6, 25 pts.) tied the second-place Tampa Bay Rowdies (10-4-6, 31 pts.) in a thrilling 3-3 match on Saturday night. Nick Zimmerman scored two goals and Jason Garey tallied a goal and an assist for the RailHawks. Luke Mulholland, Shane Hill, and Takuya Yamada each scored for the Rowdies. Saturday night featured the RailHawks Kick For Kids presented by Progress Energy where local youth and their families get the opportunity to attend a RailHawks match through the valuable donations of RailHawks partners.

“I’m disappointed that a couple of mistakes in the final minutes costs us the win. We played good soccer for part of the game, but just fell apart at the end,” said head coach Colin Clarke. “We were still able to earn a point and now have to continue working to prepare for the next match.

The Rowdies jumped to an early lead in the 17th minute when Hill received a pass from Luke Mulholland and put his shot to the far post to score the Rowdies first goal. Tampa Bay continued to attack looking for their second goal and Ray Burse was forced to make several impressive saves. The RailHawks were able to equalize the match in the 43rd minute when Zimmerman headed in a cross from captain Kupono Low.

The RailHawks started the second half on the attack and found their second goal of the match in the 49th minute when Zimmerman scored his second of the match from an assist by Garey. Just two minutes later Garey would extend the RailHawks lead to make it 3-1. Mulholland cut the lead in the 87th minute with his first goal of the match and Yamada tied the match in stoppage time. Prior to Yamada’s goal, Burse made an impressive save to stop a penalty kick by the Rowdies. Burse’s penalty kick save was followed by another big save by Ty Shipalane, who headed a ball off the goal line.

The RailHawks will travel to Florida to play against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on Saturday, August 11th at 7:30 PM. The match will be shown live at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com/live. The following weekend, on Saturday, August 18th, the RailHawks will host FC Edmonton at 7:00PM at WakeMed Soccer Park. Tickets for the match can be purchased online at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com.
