Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Preview: Carolina RailHawks

RailHawks enter in Second Round looking for a win to host L.A. Galaxy

The Carolina RailHawks will enter the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Tuesday night at 7:00 PM when they host amateur team from Irvine, CA, PSA Elite. The match will mark the return to U.S. Open Cup competition for the RailHawks as all NASL teams in the United States did not participate in 2011 tournament.

A victory against PSA Elite will bring MLS’ Defending Champion, L.A. Galaxy to WakeMed Soccer Park to play against the RailHawks on Tuesday May 29th at 7:00 PM. The star-studded Galaxy have stumbled out of the gates and currently sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with 11 points.

“Tonight’s match is an important match. We have put an emphasis on doing well in the Open Cup and anyone can advance on a given night,” said Head Coach Colin Clarke. “PSA Elite is a talented team and it will be an exciting match as we look to advance and host the L.A. Galaxy at home.”

LAST TIME OUT

The RailHawks hosted NASL leading Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday night. The match ended in a 1-1 draw but continued to show significant improvements in the RailHawks play, as the team took control of the ball and the match, forcing Islander’s goalkeeper Richard Martin to make 6 saves.

Midfielders Austin Da Luz and Breiner Ortiz made their first starts for the RailHawks. Both players showed a high level of play. Defender Gale Agbossoumonde was also a starter in his second game of the season, helping strengthen the defense.

Brian Shriver scored his fourth goal of the season and Nick Zimmerman got the assist on the goal, his first of the season. Both players have four goals on the season and one assist, leading the team offensively.
