Pablo Campos scored his second goal of the night and his 11th of the season in the 74th minute to give Minnesota United FC an unassailable 3-1 lead, and the home team was able to withstand a strong offensive attack by the visiting Fort Lauderdale Strikers for the last 15 minutes to give their home fans the win.
Campos’ second goal of the night sealed the game as he received pass from Miguel Ibarra inside the box and the Strikers defender were unable to take the ball away.
Campos also opened the scoring in the game in the 10th minute when Lucas Rodriguez crossed the ball inside the box and Campos was able to split the defenders to get to the ball and beat Strikers keeper Richard Sanchez.
The Strikers goal came from Salazar who tied the game in the 28th minute, when he received a cross from Guerrero and tried to head it in, but the Minnesota defender kicked it away; fortunately for Salazar the ball came back to him and he was able to beat Hildenbrandt.
Minnesota United scored off a corner kick in the 45th minute to take the 2-1 lead into the locker room. The corner taken by Floyd Franks was headed down by Pablo Campos and Minnesota team captain Aaron Pitchkolan was able to find the ball and direct it just past the Strikers keeper Richard Sanchez.
“We’re really building something special here and I think tonight was important for that,” said United coach Manny Lagos. “I’m proud of the guys tonight. It is so important for us to let our fans know that there are some great things about this club and that soccer is going to be here in Minnesota for many years to come.”
