Tigres will bring a great attacking side to Toyota Field. The squad is fresh off of finishing first in the 2013 Clausura Regular Season, while also tying for the best goal difference (+16) in the league, before falling to Monterrey in the first round of the playoffs. Emmanuel Villa led the team with nine goals while captain, Lucas Lobos, finished with eight. The squad recently took on Cruz Azul in Jacksonville, Florida where they won the match, 2-1.
San Antonio offers a threat of their own as the NASL side feature some talented players, including joint NASL top scorer Hans Denissen, and an exciting brand of soccer. The Scorpions will not look to sit back against the Mexican giant, but will instead attack and look to score goals against their opponent.
The Scorpions are fresh off of finishing third in the NASL Spring Standings. After a slow start to the season, San Antonio won five straight matches and six of their last seven to put themselves in title contention entering the final game of the spring. The players will be on a high at the moment, and will want to continue their good play at home against the Mexican powerhouse.
This match marks the second ever international friendly that the Scorpions have taken part in. Last season in Stockton, California, the Scorpions beat Dorados FC (who they host at Toyota Field on July 20) 3-0. Denissen scored two goals in the contest. The Dutchman and the rest of the Scorpions squad will be looking to continue their winning record against international opponents.
Following the Tigres match will be another international friendly on July 20 against Dorados again. The Mexican side will be looking for revenge from their loss to San Antonio in 2012.
Key Player - Hans Denissen– Became a scoring machine in the second half of the NASL Spring Season, collecting six goals in his last four matches to close out the first half. He will be looking to test his goal-scoring ability against a great Tigres defense in front of a big Toyota Field crowd.
Wild Card – Sean Arters– The hometown favorite has a chance to feature against the Mexican side in the friendly match. Arters bring speed and good crossing ability to the match and can be an exciting player to watch when he gets on the pitch.
Player to watch (Tigres UANL): Lucas Lobos– The Argentinean captains Tigres UANL and is one of the most creative players in the side. He finished second on the team with eight goals in their last season when they finished first.
