Scorpions to Open Toyota Field Against Familiar Foe

Tampa Bay Visits San Antonio on April 13th

The San Antonio Scorpions will open up their new home stadium—the state-of-the-art Toyota Field—against the defending NASL Champions Tampa Bay Rowdies on April 13, 2013. Last season, the Scorpions first-ever home game drew a sellout crowd of 13,151 fans to Heroes Stadium.

In that match, the Puerto Rico Islanders gave the Scorpions a match that would live long in their memory. Unfortunately for the hosts, and the 13,151 fans in attendance, it’s a bad memory that remains—a 4-0 defeat in their first-ever home game.

San Antonio and Head Coach Tim Hankinson will hope his side can get the result that was missing last season. This year’s home opener will be the first competitive game to be played at the brand-new Toyota Field, an 8,000 seat soccer-specific stadium which will replace the nearby Heroes Stadium as the long-term home of the Scorpions.

At Heroes Stadium, the Scorpions were 8-3-3 during the regular season, including two shutout wins versus Tampa Bay. The Rowdies fell 2-0, and 4-0 in their two matches in the Alamo City last term.

The most recent meeting between the Scorpions and the Rowdies was the 4-0 match on August 19, 2012 at Heroes Stadium. Pablo Campos ran the show for the hosts with a brace, helping San Antonio to a commanding lead atop the NASL standings in the six-point swing match.

Following the defeat, the Rowdies would go on an unbeaten streak until the first leg of the NASL Championship Series. The Scorpions, however, would crash out of the playoffs at home to Minnesota Stars, after Pablo Campos earned a red card in the first half, effectively ending San Antonio’s chase for the NASL Championship title.
