The Carolina RailHawks close out their season-opening three-match homestand on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against first-year club FC Edmonton.
The RailHawks enter the mid-week match coming off their first win of the season, a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Montreal on Saturday. The RailHawks (1-1-0, 3 points) are in fourth place in the NASL through two matches.
Edmonton comes to the Triangle after a three-week stay in the southeastern U.S. They opened the NASL season at Ft. Lauderdale on April 9 and played in Atlanta last Saturday. Edmonton (2-0-0, 6 points) is tied with Puerto Rico atop the NASL table.
Last time out
The RailHawks overcame a 1-0 deficit after 11 minutes and scored twice before halftime to defeat Montreal 2-1 on Saturday at WakeMed Soccer Park. Etienne Barbara equalized for the RailHawks in the 21st minute and Pablo Campos scored the game winner in the 35th.
The RailHawks outshot the Impact 16-9 and improved to 3-0-3 in their last six matches against Montreal at WakeMed Soccer Park.
First-time foes
Wednesday’s match will be the first-ever meeting between the RailHawks and Edmonton.
During the last two seasons, the RailHawks have squared off against five different first-year teams. In the first-ever meetings between those teams, the RailHawks went 3-1-1 and outscored those opponents 8-3.
When facing teams for the first time in a season series since 2009, the RailHawks are 10-6-6.
No rest
Wednesday’s match marks the first of eight on the RailHawks’ 2011 schedule where they will have four days or less of rest between matches.
In 2010, the RailHawks went 6-6-2 in matches played with that little rest between games.
No Cards
Last Saturday’s match against Montreal was the third in the RailHawks’ last 12 matches (including playoffs) where no Carolina players were carded.
If the RailHawks stay out of the referee’s book on Wednesday, they will equal their 2010 total of consecutive matches without seeing yellow or red. They went back-to-back matches without cards once in 2010 (Aug. 11; Aug. 14).
Rusin named Defender of the Week
Carolina RailHawks captain Brad Rusin was named the NASL Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2. Rusin played a key role in the RailHawks' defensive effort on Saturday against Montreal. Marking Impact forward Ali Gerba for much of the match, Rusin held him without a shot over 90 minutes and was called for just one foul.
Watson sets club assist record
Matt Watson established a new club record for assists on Saturday against Montreal. His 35th-minute set-up for Pablo Campos was the 10th of his three-plus season career with Carolina, breaking a three-way tie among he, Daniel Paladini and Kupono Low.
Etienne Does it Again
Etienne Barbara scored his second goal of the season last Saturday and the 10th of his RailHawk career. He’s finding the back of the net at a rather impressive clip. He has scored his 10 goals on just 40 shots, or one every four attempts on goal. And he’s scored those 10 goals in 1,636 minutes of play, or one every 163 minutes.
In 31 matches, he’s already climbed to fifth on the club’s all-time scoring list. He’s just four goals behind Connally Edozien (who scored 13 in 50 matches) and Daniel Paladini (who scored 13 in 68 matches).
Antoniuk Returns
Former RailHawk Dan Antoniuk, who spent the 2008 season with the club, returns to WakeMed Soccer Park with Edmonton.
In 2008 with Carolina, Antonkiuk appeared in 30 matches and had three goals and three assists in 2,020 minutes played. Though he spent just one season with the RailHawks, Antoniuk’s name is featured throughout the club’s record book. He holds the club record for fouls in a single game (7) and fouls in a season (55). He’s one of 12 players to have scored in back-to-back games, and he’s one of three players to have played 30 games in a season.
In his last visit to WakeMed Soccer Park, with the Charleston Battery in 2009, Antoniuk scored a goal three minutes in to a 2-1 Charleston victory.
In two matches with Edmonton this season, Antoniuk has one assist.
